I keep thinking I'm on my post ride depression and then something good happens. Nearly two weeks on and the money is still rolling in. Lots of people who didn't quite get around to sponsoring us before the ride have somehow remembered afterwards. In particular our most senior cyclist Terry Burns has piled on the pounds (in the nicest way) and we got the rather splendid news that Santander, which he also chairs, is matching the first £3500 of his sponsorship. With similar gift matching from Google as well as donations from Channel 4 and Deutsche Bank our running total right now is over £225</div><div>,000.<br>

<div>
We are already thinking about next year, talking to potential company supporters and signing up the first riders. If we managed this with 30 cyclists imagine what we can do with a few more. </div>

And Dan Cobley from Google sent the following out to his sponsors. It is a great account of the ride :<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<b><span style="font-size: medium;">THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR GENEROSITY</span></b></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
The ride was a huge success. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Early last Friday afternoon, I and four other Googlers joined the crowd and assembled at the Channel 4 HQ building in central London. The ride was organised in aid of the <a href="http://www.dc-trust.org/" target="_blank" title="blocked::http://www.dc-trust.org/">Duchenne Children's Trust</a> - a charity set up by ITN/C4News employees Emily and Nick whose 5 yr old son has the disease and will not live to see 30 unless a cure is found. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
We watched a<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMVxYQzzNbY" target="_blank" title="blocked::http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMVxYQzzNbY"> moving video </a>about the charity, got a few crazy rousing words from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Snow" target="_blank" title="blocked::http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Snow">Jon Snow</a>, all in shouted French, and then set off a little after 3pm. We pedaled on the busy, potholed English roads down to Newhaven, the group of 30 odd cyclists naturally splitting into three sub groups once we had escaped London. I found myself in the front group and we set a pretty blistering pace - helped by lovely weather, a bit of a tail wind, and too much competitive energy. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
In Newhaven we stopped for pizza, mountains of pasta, a couple of beers, and then boarded the ferry. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krishnan_Guru-Murthy" target="_blank" title="blocked::http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krishnan_Guru-Murthy">Krish</a> had done an amazing job organising everything including negotiating free ferry tickets. In return we had to get a group photo from the ferry company PR guy who did his best to try to be David Bailey in a high viz jacket. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
The ferry ride was far from fragrant with four gel and protein shake-fuelled blokes in a tiny couchette. We were woken at 3:15am (2:15am UK time) to get ready for the next stretch, which started in pitch dark, cold mist on repurposed old railway through a gorgeous forest. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
This was the first of something we would get accustomed to. Lovely smooth, pothole-free roads with barely any traffic and courteous drivers. What a change from England. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
As part of a faster group, we gobbled up the miles, working, peleton-style to conserve energy. Every 40k or so, we stopped to he refueled with porridge, flapjacks and energy bars, by the support truck and to regroup with the other riders. That gave the overall ride a more relaxed feel, even if each cycling stage was pretty brutal with lots of hills and average moving speeds of around 28-30km/hr.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqQobMbAIyIrJDWu7wTR3coAnaxh9OPWtdgO62SqBUI0N7ga83hMVIQvXCaIauhcjikJy4716Odv3qn18G_ox8GCUgNmJ52clZyupCANGjzu9g5AzSmtiYmHEEJoAvx7Uzl7ZCgWLJAf0/s1600/979886_10151696338738832_1325183619_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqQobMbAIyIrJDWu7wTR3coAnaxh9OPWtdgO62SqBUI0N7ga83hMVIQvXCaIauhcjikJy4716Odv3qn18G_ox8GCUgNmJ52clZyupCANGjzu9g5AzSmtiYmHEEJoAvx7Uzl7ZCgWLJAf0/s320/979886_10151696338738832_1325183619_o.jpg" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Around midday, in a particularly hilly section, I wished I had not pushed so hard first thing as I struggled to stay with the fast group on the climbs. But I hung on and tried to enjoy the views as we rode. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
About 15km outside Paris we stopped for a last regrouping and awaited the final flourish. The flourish kept us waiting rather too long and got a few of us quite anxious as the remaining minutes of our 24 hours ticked by. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
With about 40 mins to the 24hr mark, the flourish arrived and it was worth waiting for. It roared up in the shape of 3 off-duty police outriders sporting big motorbikes and high viz jackets. One had a moustache you could use to sweep the patio. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
With Emily's jag at the front, hazard lights blinking, and the support truck behind, klaxon blaring, we rode in formation into Paris; the three bikers stopping the traffic at every junction and waving us through. People stopped, looked and waved or cheered as we hared through the red lights, determined to beat the 4pm deadline. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
The final highlight was turning a near-final corner and standing up on the pedals to climb the cobbles of the Champs Elysee up to the Arc do Triomph, just like they do in the Tour de France.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUN4sZzdVooFa-c7GZ4aY6BnBc-mm2Ih-SxsZTGDOTQ2nF5Ud80_qzz2z7KVlFuoQeWnlE2MSAM7XsjJDZoD2oCxAUBQJYOHRzLmZsfeZHJsGfvdTpnImY1liN-DAmGE4_5HJO-SfeoZE/s1600/IMG_4256.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: medium; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUN4sZzdVooFa-c7GZ4aY6BnBc-mm2Ih-SxsZTGDOTQ2nF5Ud80_qzz2z7KVlFuoQeWnlE2MSAM7XsjJDZoD2oCxAUBQJYOHRzLmZsfeZHJsGfvdTpnImY1liN-DAmGE4_5HJO-SfeoZE/s320/IMG_4256.jpg" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
From there is was a short sweep to the Eiffel Tower where we rode in, triumphantly, in 23hrs and 58minutes, for photos, smiles and, of course, a cold beer. Our legs and bums were sore, but we were all beaming. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
The journey back was uneventful. I took the 20:13 Eurostar, pedaled across from St Pancras to Paddington, got the train to Reading, and then pedaled from there the last four, sore miles home - trying to avoid the worst of the English potholes. Back home at 11:15pm, I shared most of a bottle of wine with my wife Zella and then slept very, very well. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
At the end of it, through your generosity, I raised over £5,500. The Google five raised over £20k and the ride overall raised £200k. That will bring a cure for Emily and Nick's son a step closer. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
Thanks again for your support. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
There are some photos and videos of the ride <a href="http://bike4good.blogspot.co.uk/" target="_blank" title="blocked::http://bike4good.blogspot.co.uk/">here</a>. </div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
All the best</div>
<div style="font-family: arial,sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

I think most things are organised. It has been utterly exhausting and I'm not in great shape. But as of this evening we had already raised over £177,000 from friends, colleagues, employers and complete strangers. I'm starting to think we can do even better by the end of the weekend. We leave at 3pm friday - waved off by Jon Snow and Emily Reuben after lunch at Channel 4. We should be at Padella D'Oro in Newhaven by 8.30 in time to make the ferry sailing at 11pm. Then who knows....<br />
<br />
You'll be able to track my progress using Garmin Connect. My satnav will be live with speed and other depressing stats. Stephen Hird will be uploading videos of our progress. And there will be a still picture every five minutes from Martin Collett. I hope you enjoy following it more than I will enjoying doing it! And if you can help us raise just a little bit more that would be lovely too.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04071524552913440987noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8586938523979186896.post-72810818319767394452013-05-28T16:17:00.002-07:002013-05-28T16:22:41.097-07:00Two Days to GoA great day for sponsorship. Lots of people seemed to remember that the day is imminent and went to the donation pages. Ed Miliband, who I collared at Google's Big Tent last week, remembered to give us a donation. We got a great boost from Richard Desmond's charitable foundation who sponsored David Abraham to the tune of £5000. Yes that's the owner of Five paying the CEO of Channel 4 to cycle to Paris for charity. Who said TV was a cut throat business? We also discovered that a couple of our riders have been quietly raising lots of money on Virgin Giving and JustGiving that I wasn't aware of. So if you add up all our sponsorship we're already over £90,000. Add in the £47555 from C4's "Five Minutes to a Fortune" and we've raised well over £135K and the ride hasn't begun. We want to smash through £150K by the time we get to Paris. Please help. It really will make a huge difference to Duchenne Children's Trust who need to raise £1 Million by September to co-fund a medical trial.<br />
<br />
Meanwhile I've stopped training. I believe they call it tapering. I call it getting fat again. And my knee hurts a bit. And I'm getting a cold. Suddenly all that confidence I had on Monday is slipping away. So we managed the Pearson 150 on Sunday. Even me. And at a pace that means that we do have a chance of making London to Paris in under 24 hours. Just. It was painful, and we got split up. Our riders are a very mixed ability group - from the very fast to the very slow (me). But even I managed the 93 miles in about seven hours of cycling plus various stops which can be trimmed I am sure. Ditchling Beacon was awful, as were the long climbs around Box Hill and Epson Down. Around 2000m climbing - which is the same as the whole 130 mile stretch from Dieppe to Paris. So I am hoping that will feel easier over a longer distance. If you want to see the Garmin track of my ride it is <a href="http://connect.garmin.com/activity/315196357#.UZk6pJ4Hl6s.twitter" target="_blank">here</a> and Martin Collett's altogether more impressive stats are <a href="http://connect.garmin.com/activity/315075154" target="_blank">here</a> </div>

<br />
As mentioned yesterday Jon Snow has had to pull out of the ride. In penance he has made an offer that will involve almost as much pain as riding from London to Paris in 24 hours. Jon will be ceremoniously waxed, in the Channel 4 News studio, to raise money instead. We suggested for every £10,000 donated he should wax one leg. He then rashly offered to have his whole body done if he gets to £25,000. That's gotta hurt. So please spread the word. His donation page is <a href="http://www.justgiving.com/snowwax">www.justgiving.com/snowwax</a> or you can text FOUR48 £5 to 70070<br />
<br />
Here's why this is going to be fun :<br />

I don't think I am alone. The Pearson 150 training ride from Sutton to Brighton and back this sunday is going to be very telling. Just half the distance of London to Paris and already feeling quite daunting.<br />
<br />
Sponsorship is going really well. Including the money won on TV and some match funding promised by some of the riders' employers (thanks Google, et al) we have already raised over £100,000! I'm hopeful that the weekend of the ride itself will generate enough interest in social media and on TV to bring in much more. <br />
<br />
<b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We have set up a page on JustGiving <a href="http://www.justgiving.com/bike4good" target="_blank">HERE </a> and you can donate £5 to this by text message simply by texting FOUR88 £5 to 70070 </span></b><br />
<br />
The bad news is that my partner in crime Jon Snow has had to drop out - a domestic diary clash means he can't make it. However the good news is that Terry Burns (or Lord Burns of Pitshanger, as I should call him), Chairman of Channel 4, has decided to join us. This has given me great hope of having somebody to ride alongside me. And I am not embarrassed at all by the fact Terry is 25 years older than me! So as not to wear himself out completely Terry is going to relay the journey, with David Abraham, the Channel 4 CEO, stepping in to share the burden. A brilliant level of support from the bosses for which I am very grateful. <br />
<br />
A few of us gathered at Pearsons tonight to compare notes and swap maps...<br />

We've listed it on our <a href="https://mydonate.bt.com/teams/bike4good" target="_blank">Mydonate pages</a> as £23777.50 in each of our "offline donations" columns. I'm counting on the fact once people/friends/colleagues see we are between the 32 of us raising quite a lot of money - perhaps enough to make a real difference to the charity - they will want to join the effort and donate more.<br />

Well I did in the end in far milder conditions. What a lovely place....Why though does Krish look better than me in cycling gear. <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC5eDtGO5goW60pH5d5VUyLsrVwcBEuJd1AlMW2d86DcslpRrgHY7jyamk2yz-gw2zXBlFHLHGFKo9znhfml8ex9qrytqf0s33deZmaQ9E3x3H4-9DUNn3jLeoT6Vc7EPzghhk33LXtBc/s1600/IMG-20130419-00006.jpg" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC5eDtGO5goW60pH5d5VUyLsrVwcBEuJd1AlMW2d86DcslpRrgHY7jyamk2yz-gw2zXBlFHLHGFKo9znhfml8ex9qrytqf0s33deZmaQ9E3x3H4-9DUNn3jLeoT6Vc7EPzghhk33LXtBc/s320/IMG-20130419-00006.jpg" /></a>Ben Monro-Davieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14681903930467503314noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8586938523979186896.post-83490246806266606442013-04-22T12:20:00.001-07:002013-04-22T12:20:53.215-07:00Warm weather training<br />

<span lang="EN-GB">So I've just got back from 2 weeks in Florida. With London to Paris getting ever closer, I was concerned about missing out on training. So I did a lot of running out there, and I hired a bike for a day and did a 45 mile ride.<u></u><u></u></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; color: #222222; font-family: arial, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">
<span lang="EN-GB">I was happy to see my average speed increase by 2mph more than usual. Much as I'd like to convince myself this was due to the hire bike being carbon and therefore offering me unarguable proof of the necessity of upgrading my bike, I put it down more to a complete lack of traffic lights and roundabouts on the island where we were staying, meaning no slowing down and getting back up to speed. It was also completely flat, aside from a bridge on the causeway, just about visible in the background of the last picture below.</span></div>

I'm writing this while I still feel virtuous and the pain hasn't kicked in. So with Martin Collett, Ed Gretton and Oli Canning I set off from C4 this morning about 8am bound for Newhaven on the route we'll be using for May 31st. Martin had dodgy, slipping gears and was limited to 3 speeds - which felt a bit like a golf handicap. Oli is quite fit and was quite fast. Ed had clearly been drinking the night before or hadn't done any training for a while as he was even slower than me - which is quite shocking (more for him than me to be honest - he's known me for 38 years). The first half was a bit slow - the route out of London was good but it took us 3 hours to get to Turners Hill for a Mars Bar, bread roll and isotonic drink. There are a few grim hills. The total climb from London to Newhaven is over 1000m - and you feel it over the North Downs. But the views at the top are stunning and the downhills are fun. The second half was better - 2 hours to Newhaven. We could have gone quicker but we were quite tired. 5 hours is a good target for the day anyway - it means we can leave around 3pm. Martin and I had a brief lunch at Padella D'Oro which we have booked out for our dinner before jumping on the ferry. I popped a couple of Nurofen, swigged two beers, scoffed penne bolognese like my five year old has and we got the train home. I would thoroughly recommend this ride - Martin has worked out a great route with some great views. Of course being a Krishnan training ride we did encounter a few small dry flakes of snow - but nothing like either last weekend or Boxhill. On May 31st we will only have to do another 130 miles after we've done this ride...oh sure, it is going to be a breeze. </div>

So when Dan Brooke kept insisting on braving the snow I couldn't say no. That and my wife accusing me of "wimping out". It was cold, wet, snowing and my goggles kept steaming up so I couldn't see. But we managed 3 laps of Richmond Park - enough to feel a bit virtuous. But my feet were soaking when I got home despite supposedly waterproof overshoes, and I have an inexplicable break in the skin of my right knee, which I can only assume is due to pedalling so hard. That's my story anyway.<br />

I'm giving away the 17" Ridgeback Speed I've had sitting under a tarpaulin for years until I decided to get properly into cycling and splashed out on a Pearson. It isn't a masterpiece. I think it cost about 400 quid. But it has an aluminium frame, shimano gears and shimano pedals which flip over to use with SPD cleats if you want and mudguards to keep you dry. It is a bike to get from A to B - and I've ridden it the 10 miles to work a couple of times recently. But I don't need it anymore. So I'll give it away to somebody who sponsors the London-Paris bike ride and expresses an interest via twitter (@krishgm) in coming to pick the bike up at Channel 4 News. All names will go in a cycling helmet and I'll draw one lucky winner. You can come watch the show too if you like. Sponsor me here :<br />

<br />
I went on <a href="http://youtu.be/V8u2ilWMVjc" target="_blank">Channel 4's "What's Cooking"</a> on friday March 15th at 1130-1230 to talk food, diet and the London-Paris in 24 hours ride. It's on 4OD or Youtube<br />

<br />
<a href="http://www.itv.com/news/london/topic/london-tonight/" target="_blank">ITV's London Tonight</a> are having me and Jon on the sofa to talk chaffing next week, and in April we will be doing something else quite special on C4 that has to stay secret for now.<br />

And there is more in the pipeline. All good things to point people towards when asking for their sponsorship and donations.<br />
